Dance A Level

Dance A Level

About the course

This is a creative, challenging and specialist course, combining the practical and theoretical study of dance. Through technique classes, choreography workshops, rehearsals and theory sessions, you will develop your skills as both a choreographer and performer. In addition you will broaden your knowledge of professional dance and extend your critical skills.

5/C in English Language; 5/B or above in GCSE Dance; successfully pass a pre-course audition.

The focus of the course is on contemporary dance and you will take part in regular technique classes to improve your skills. You will explore choreography through generating, developing and structuring movement material in response to a variety of stimuli and there will be opportunities to perform in public.

Over two years, critical engagement with areas of study and choreographers and their works will develop your knowledge and understanding of dance through time. In addition, trips to see live dance and workshops from professional companies will support and inform your practice.

In the second year you will be required to choreograph a group dance, perform as part of a quartet and perform a solo dance. This will be assessed by a visiting AQA examiner. In addition there is a written exam on a compulsory and optional set work. Assessment is 50% practical and 50% written exam.

A Level Dance on its own or in combination with A level Drama is ideal for progression to either vocational schools or dance/performing arts degrees at university. Students from the course have studied at London Contemporary Dance School, Northern School of Contemporary Dance, Urdang Academy, University of Surrey, Kingston University and Middlesex University.
