About the course

These qualifications are designed to provide students with the knowledge, skills and understanding necessary to access and progress to degree level study or employment in the media sector.

They provide an opportunity for those with an interest in media to explore, develop and test their creativity within a qualification structure which is stimulating and demanding and provides a supportive transition from general to more specialised study.

The Level 3 Diploma and Extended Diploma in Creative Media Production & Technology are designed to provide students with the knowledge, skills and understanding necessary to access and progress to degree level study or employment in the media sector.

They provide an opportunity for those who have an interest in media to explore, develop and test their creativity within a qualification structure which is stimulating and demanding and provides a supportive transition from general to more specialised study.

Study for these qualifications are not time constrained but will normally be over a period of one year for the Diploma and two years for the Extended Diploma.

The structure of the qualifications, with units linked to provide coherence, will allow students to synthesise newly acquired practical skills with theoretical knowledge and understanding as they explore their aptitude and ambition and the particular characteristics of a broad range of creative media disciplines.

Students will be encouraged to recognise not only the unique characteristics of different disciplines, but also the dynamic and potentially innovative relationships between those disciplines.

You will need four GCSEs at grade C or above. Alternatively, you will need a BTEC First Diploma or UAL Level 2 Diploma at Merit grade (including Functional Skills in English and Maths). All applicants will be subject to a formal interview prior to full enrolment.

Level 3 Diploma in Creative Media Production & Technology

Students must complete the eight mandatory units listed below:

  • Unit 1: Introduction to media processes and technical skills
  • Unit 2: Introduction to design and research skills in creative media production
  • Unit 3: Introduction to professional practice in creative media production
  • Unit 4: Critical and contextual awareness in creative media production
  • Unit 5: Investigating audio production and technology
  • Unit 6: Investigating visual production and technology
  • Unit 7: Investigating interactive production and technology
  • Unit 8: Developing a creative media production project

Level 3 Extended Diplomas in Creative Media Production & Technology

Students must complete units 1-8 of the Diploma in addition to Units 9-12 and either Unit 13 or Unit14 listed below:

  • Unit 9: Characteristics and contexts in creative media production
  • Unit 10: Engaging with an audience in creative media production
  • Unit 11: Preparing for progression in creative media production
  • Unit 12: Specialist study in creative media production

Students must achieve one of the two optional units below:

  • Unit 13: Extended project in creative media production
  • Unit 14: Extended project in creative media production

Units 1 - 7 of the Level 3 Diploma in Creative Media Production & Technology will be internally assessed and internally moderated against the assessment criteria for those units.

Unit 8, the final unit of the Level 3 Diploma in Creative Media Production & Technology, will be internally assessed, internally and externally moderated against the assessment and grading criteria for those units. Unit 8 is graded Pass, Merit or Distinction and determines the overall final grade for the qualification. To achieve a Merit or Distinction grade, a student must meet all of the assessment and grade criteria in the respective categories in full.

Units 9 - 12 of the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Creative Media Production & Technology will be internally assessed and internally moderated against the assessment criteria for those units. Units 8, 13 and 14 will be internally assessed, internally and externally moderated against the assessment and grading criteria for those units.

These units are graded Pass, Merit or Distinction. Performance in Unit 8 determines the overall final grade for the Diploma. Performance in Unit 13 or 14 determines the overall final grade for the Extended Diploma. To achieve a Merit or Distinction grade, a student must meet all of the assessment and grade criteria in the respective categories in full.There is no compensation on the basis of performance in Unit 8. To achieve a pass in any Unit, all assessment criteria must be met. Failure to meet assessment criteria will lead to referral. Students are allowed one opportunity to redeem a referral.

Usually students gained a UAL level 3 Diploma or Extended Diploma progress onto Higher Education to study a HND, Foundation Degree or BA in Creative Media Production. This is subject to total UCAS points achieved. Please see below UCAS tariff table for details.  Also, there are opportunities to apply for apprenticeships or employments in the creative industry.

Destination: Working for Halifax bank

Between 2009 -11 Gulsah Sami took a BTEC National Diploma for IT Practitioners at the Centre for Business Arts and Technology. After finishing her course with two distinctions and a merit she graduated to City University to study Computer Science..

She said: “I had always had an interest in IT and had heard good things about the course at City and Islington College online.

“The teachers at the College were very inspiring and would support you with any problems you had that would help you progress. We are still in contact with the teachers at the College and they still support us and give us advice.

“I learnt a lot on the course which has really helped me in my roles at Virgin Media and Halifax.”
