Located in London, a worldwide hub for media creatives, this extended degree provides exciting opportunities to develop your skills and knowledge, preparing you for a successful career in the media and creative industries.

The course is ideal if you don't have traditional qualifications or meet the entry requirements for direct entry to the 3-year BA (Hons). It enables you to study for a degree in four years, including a foundation year that focuses on developing your academic skills and subject knowledge for degree-level study.

Through practical work experience and with expert teaching from media professionals and respected academics, you'll develop the skills and expertise you need for your career, including how to construct basic websites, documentaries, news stories and academic essays. By taking part in stimulating debates and interviewing a range of interesting people, you'll develop your own media style. 

The foundation year (Level 3) is taught at City and Islington College, with one module taught at London Metropolitan University's Holloway Road campus. On successful completion of the foundation year, you can progress directly to a wide range of BA (Hons) programmes such as Digital Media, Media and Communications, Film and Television Studies  and Journalism at London Metropolitan University.

In addition to London Metropolitan University's standard entry requirements, you should have:

  • at least one A Level (or a minimum of 40 UCAS points from an equivalent level 3 qualification e.g. BTEC Subsidiary/National/BTEC Extended Diploma
  • English Language GCSE at grade C (Grade 4 from 2017) or above (or equivalent).

All applicants must be able to demonstrate proficiency in the English Language. Applicants who require a Tier 4 Student Visa may need to provide a Secure English Language Test (SELT) such as Academic IELTS. You'll be supported by mentors proficient in media and communications, film, TV and broadcast media, digital media and journalism, and will have access to advanced teaching and laboratory facilities.

Level 3 modules include:

  • Introduction to Media and Communications
  • Introduction to Film, TV and Broadcast Media
  • Introduction to Digital Media Skills
  • Introduction to Journalism
  • Writing for Media

Level 4 modules include:

  • Approaches to Film and Television
  • Moving Image and Sound Practice
  • Media Histories

Level 5 modules include:

  • Television Studies
  • Work Related Learning for The Media
  • Crime and The Media
  • Documentary Photography
  • Photography Journalism

Level 6 modules include:

  • Media, Culture and Identity
  • Digital Video Post-Production
  • Documentary Film Making
  • Globalisation and the Media.

Modules at Level 4, 5 and 6 may vary depending on the degree course selected.

You will be assessed through portfolios, presentations, essays, term-definitions, digital artefact (blogs, web designs etc.), digital games, individual and group projects, and dissertations.
