16 November 2009

City and Islington Sixth Form College played host to a Cambridge admissions event for 50 high achieving year 11 students from the Islington Borough to encourage them to consider making an application to Cambridge.

The students were from three of City and Islington College’s partner schools, Islington Arts and Media School, Mount Carmel School and Elizabeth Garret Anderson School. Students from Central Foundation Boys School also attended the event.

Dr Melanie Taylor, Admissions Tutor at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge said “There are still a lot of misapprehensions about Cambridge and students are ruling themselves out as potential applicants on the basis of hearsay and misinformation. Events like this one aim to dispel myths and give students an insight into what studying at Cambridge could be like, academically and socially.”

To give students a taster of Cambridge University, Dr Joe Townsend, Lecturer in Chemistry at Corpus Christi College presented a mini lecture titled “A Quantum Leap For Mankind”.

Anisah Begum, a student from Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Language College who attended the event said. “I found this event helpful as I was told what to expect from Cambridge and what studies may benefit me for the career path I desired. The event helped me to have a better understanding of Cambridge, and I am now considering studying there.”

Keren Abse, Director of City and Islington Sixth Form College said “It is great having Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, come to Islington to talk to aspiring Year 10s and 11s. I hope that the event will have made the school students think about what they can achieve and that it is worth aiming high. It was really good having them talk at the Sixth Form College this morning.”

I wanted to study a course that would allow me to gain work experience and a formal qualification, says Joanne, who studied Accounting Advanced Apprenticeship. The teachers were brilliant, they offered extra tuition outside of course hours. In the future, I want to gain further qualifications and a job within the tax sector.
