CANDI expert to address high profile sustainability event

8th March 2010

Daniel Norris, Deputy Director of Applied Science Centre at City and Islington College, will join a distinguished panel from academia and business to address some key questions about Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects and the work and career options that these open for young people.

The questions are to be discussed at a conference on Wednesday 17 March 2010 Daniel Norrisat BaseLearning, the education and skills modules of a pioneering UK event about sustainable business management.

Questions will include; how can STEM subjects equip young people for jobs and careers in a low-carbon economy? What role should industry play in engaging and inspiring young people in STEM and bridging the gap between classroom achievement and the workplace?

BaseLearning is the education and skills strand of a wider event called base which addresses the opportunities for business as the UK shifts to a low-carbon model. Education and skills play a key role. The role of business and educators in inspiring young people is critical.

Daniel is joined by Sir Mike Tomlinson and other keynote speakers who will discuss the roles of industry and educationalists in engaging young people in STEM subjects, and exploring how both sectors can work together to inspire, engage and equip young people for the future. Sir Mike Tomlinson opens the debate, and is joined by senior educators and figures from industry, including:

• Derek Bell, Head of Education, Wellcome Trust
• Ian Duffy, Manager, UK Education Programme, BP
• Brenda Bigland, Headteacher, Lent Rise Combined School

Kate Bellingham, National STEM Co-ordinator, Department for Children, Schools and Families is another keynote speaker.

Daniel is a keen innovator – he holds national and international patents. He has a remit for innovation at the Centre for Applied Sciences – creating new types of course to meet new needs. The Centre is the first in London to offer the new Environmental Diploma – which it helped to write. Daniel is hoping to create a regional centre for skills in Energy and Resource Efficiency. This will help businesses across London become more efficient in using energy and resources - to save money and to reduce our contribution to global warming.

The Sixth Form College has fantastic science facilities, said Hazel, who did her A-levels at the College and who intends to go on to university to study medicine. The course was really good, the teachers were always ready with help and so were the office staff. I would recommend the College without hesitation and in fact, my sister is coming here next year to study!
