City and Islington Welcomes LSC Delegation
Geoff Russell, the Chief Executive of the Learning and Skills
Council today (20/01/10) visited City and Islington College’s
Centre for Applied Sciences and Sixth Form College.

Geoff and his team were welcomed to the College by the
Principal, Frank McLoughlin, Chair of the Governors, Jack Morris,
and Director of the Centre for Applied Sciences, Derek Puddick.
They were given a brief tour of the state-of-the-art laboratories
and facilities at the two centres in Angel Islington, before
participating in a productive and wide-ranging discussion about the
College’s future plans and potential for growth.
The visitors learned about City and Islington’s courses and
educational provision which range from Introductory Diplomas to
Foundation Degree and lead to professions that require specialist
scientific knowledge such as forensics, optics, medicine, nursing
and sports and fitness training. Highlights of the tour
included an introduction to the college’s provision in
Environmental and Land-Based Studies, which equips students with
the knowledge and skills to help deal with the big environmental
challenges of the future and gives them the opportunity to work
with prestigious organisations such as London Zoo, The Royal
Geographical Society and King's College University of London. The
course is particularly noteworthy as it is allows students the
opportunity to study the subject in an urban rather than a rural or
semi-rural environment and enables them to get hands-on experience
with many types of animals and plants.
The team also heard about the College’s work in ‘Creating
Pathways to Employment and Higher Education in the Sciences’ which
was recognised with the award of the Queen’s Anniversary
Prize.
