Photographer's work recognised by National Art Gallery
4 February 2010
City and Islington photography lecturer Pam Isherwood has had
the importance and quality of her work recognised by the National
Portrait Gallery with the launch of an exhibition of the work of
photographic agency; Format Photography, of which she was a
founding member.
The works, many of which have been acquired by the Gallery for
its permanent collection, are currently on show at the
internationally-renowned gallery in Central London. The portraits
in the display represent significant figures in the period 1983 –
2003, including Joan Ruddock and Charlotte Wolff.
Pam comments:
“This is real recognition of the pioneering work done by the
agency in so many ways. Having worked as a freelance press
photographer for many years it is gratifying to be able to share
these images with the general public.”
She continues, “Changes in technology have meant that there is
now a lot less craft involved in photography than when these
photographs were taken, but the digitization of photography has
also brought about some benefits, most notably the democratisation
of photography, meaning anyone with a creative streak can now take
high quality photographs.”
Format Photographers, an all-women agency, was founded in 1983.
The agency documented the world from a different perspective and
aimed to enable its photographers to develop their creativity and
careers. Founding members included Anita Corbin, Sheila Gray,
Joanne O’Brien and Val Wilmer.
