City and Islington's Got Talent

4 February 2010

First year Foundation Photography students have been showcasing their talents this week at an exhibition at Islington City Library.

Exhibition

The week long exhibition is a collection of commercial work on the theme of Islington as part of the students first year camera controls project.

Each student has produced a collection of photos which display the many different streets, buildings, façade’s and areas of Islington. The exhibition culminated with an award for the best complete assignment, awarded to Sacha Schweda by sponsors Hugh Grove Associates and Keyphoto.

Sacha’s prize was £250 in equipment vouchers, with the runner up Marcin Gulbicki receiving £100’s worth.

Terry Sims, Course Manager for Foundation Degree Photography, said: “This exhibition has recognised the hard work of the students and introduced some of them to the arena of commercial activity for the first time.

“Foundation degree photography is just one of our many successful Higher Education courses blending skills and knowledge that are highly valued by employers and universities.”

The first prize winner, Sacha Scheweda, added: “The benefits of exhibitions like this are that you have a goal to aim for. It makes the photos you take much more meaningful if they culminate in an exhibition and if you are able to see them in large print, unshackled from the computer screen.”

I found that my course was a creative and practical experience that allowed me to get a better understanding about working with children, says Alema, who studied on the Child Care and Education Diploma. She is now continuing her studies on a degree course in education at London Metropolitan University.
