National No Smoking Day on Wednesday March 10th 2010 will see thousands of people across the UK attempt to give up smoking, sometimes for the sake of a loved one or often just for themselves.

In the build up to National No Smoking Day, NHS Islington are running a ‘Who are you stopping for?’ campaign which urges people to set a date to quit smoking and to nominate a person (usually a loved one) as a reason to stop smoking.

As part of the campaign, NHS Islington visited the City and Islington College in order to find students who are giving up smoking for a loved one. A selection of students agreed to have their photos taken, along with a board detailing who they are stopping for and what date they are giving up.

These photos will be used by NHS Islington for its smokefree campaign and publicity materials, including on the side of the smokefree part bus, which will be driving around Islington in the coming weeks leading up to National No Smoking Day.

Lola, who is currently studying Italian at A2 level, gave her reasons for quitting smoking. She said: “I quit smoking in December last year, because I have a 3 year old son and don’t want him to see me smoking.

“I think campaigns like this help to educate people who are thinking of quitting. People who don’t want to quit smoking won’t be influenced by a campaign like this but it’s important to keep reminding people since so many are always trying to quit.

“College students are a key target since many young people start smoking between the ages of 16-18. They need to be reminded that smoking isn’t a cool thing, it’s harmful and it can cause serious health problems. Hopefully this campaign will deter some students who were thinking of taking up the habit.”

National No Smoking Day is on Wednesday March 10th. Anyone who lives, works or studies in Islington can register for NHS Islington’s free stop smoking support programme. To go smokefree, call freephone 0800 093 90 30 or visit www.whoareyoustoppingfor.co.uk

Verena came from a school in Germany to do her A-levels at our Sixth Form College. The relationship between the students and the teachers is quite an informal one and it's very friendly, says Verena, with a lot of support from the teachers, who were really good and very helpful. The College has a great atmosphere, very multi-cultural, very nice. I'd recommend City and Islington because of its very competent teaching and just how nice everyone is here.
