Six Form Students Put in a Star Performance

12 February 2010

Students at the Sixth Form College in Angel put in a timeless performance at the opening night of their annual Sixth Form College stage production, which was based this year on the 1966 hit Broadway Musical Cabaret.

72 students in total were involved in the opening show on Wednesday evening, including actors, band performers and technical stage support. The production will be running for four nights at the theatre in the Centre for Applied Sciences, with the finale tomorrow night.

As participation is voluntary and non curriculum, the show involves a mixture of students taking a variety of different A-Levels, rather than just Drama.

Claire Widgery, Producer and Joint Coordinator of Performing Arts, said: “I am very proud of all of the students taking part. They have been rehearsing since September, so there has been a lot of hard work and commitment from everyone. The annual Sixth Form College show is always a great opportunity for students to express themselves and showcase their talents.”

Callum Hurley, an English, French, Drama and History A Level student, who plays the Nazi Officer Ernst Ludwig in the play, said before the first performance: “I am a little bit nervous, but maybe it is excitement. I have performed in minor plays before in front of very small audiences, but this will be the biggest one I’ve ever done. However, I’m confident we will all put on a great show!”

Ella Dodge, an A2 Drama student, who is playing the trumpet in the band, said: “I am really excited and can’t wait for the first night. I haven’t played the trumpet in front of a live audience for 2 years but I am confident I will do well. I acted in last year’s show so I thought it would be a nice change to be in the band this time.”

Cabaret still has performances scheduled for tonight and tomorrow night, starting at 7:30pm.

Our coursework was interesting, says Alan who studied A-levels with us. The teachers showed a lot of energy in the classroom, which was very motivating and really helped to keep my attention. The new Sixth Form College had great facilities for the students to use, so you've got good resources and a good atmosphere which really contributes to your learning.
