College Highly Commended at Environmental Awards

10 November 2008

On Friday, 10th November, the College received a Highly Commended Certificate in the category “Best Environmental University / College” at the Archant Environmental Awards.

The awards ceremony saw schools; colleges; businesses and individuals recognised for their contributions to environmental awareness and protection projects. The judges praised the College’s environmental initiatives, which include:

Identifying ‘Green Champions’ within the estates and facilities team. The champions have been highly instrumental in identifying energy saving initiatives, including:

  • Light replacement programme to install energy efficient light bulbs
  • Installation of energy saving Airblade hand-dryers

The introduction of a waste management scheme which has seen over 5,232 kilos of paper recycled, thus saving 89 trees.

  • Community and volunteering initiatives, including students cleaning up the Thames waterways.

A Cycle to Work scheme for staff providing big savings on bikes and safety equipment.

Martin Hesketh, Deputy Principal, highlights the importance of environmental awareness and action in the day to day running of the College:  “City and Islington College has a crucial role to play in terms of environmental stewardship.  We are working hard to reduce our carbon emissions by 15% by 2010.  To do this we are actively engaging with our students, staff and key community groups.  Going green is about action now and long term behavioural change.  Together we can make a difference.”

Archant London Environmental Awards

The awards bring together individuals, community groups and the young and the elderly who have made significant contributions to help protect the environment.

There are no 'losers' at the awards - all nominees will have demonstrated a level of commitment to all green issues, and all parts of the community have been able to make a difference, including households, businesses and schools.

I've always had a keen interest in science and in joining the Police force, says Phillip, who is studying Forensic Science BTEC National Diploma. I really enjoy visiting the College's crime scene facilities to collect evidence for my studies. This gives me a real feel for what it is like to be a scene-of-crime officer. The staff at the College are friendly and the facilities are great. Once I've finished the course, I will apply for a job with the Metropolitan Police.
