More than 70 young designers from across the UK, Italy, Croatia, Sweden, Finland and the USA were chosen from hundreds of independent designers to exhibit at the fashion shows held in Spitafields Market.  Among these were thirteen Foundation Degree students from City and Islington College who made it through the highly competitive selection process.

Alternative Fashion Week gives innovative new designers who want to be discovered, an opportunity to present their work directly to the press, public and fashion industry. It shows the most original and creative collections by a fresh crop of new fashion designers with truly unique ideas.

It is the fourth year the College has been involved in the show, proving City and Islington continues to produce a high caliber of new designers.

Janie Murphy and Sharon Carlin, Course Leaders at City and Islington, feel participating in the show is a fantastic opportunity for the College, “It’s really good exposure for the students, and enables them to gain real experience of exhibiting at a catwalk show.”

“It is also a great networking event and will help the students source models, make-up artists and stylists for their end of year show.”

The key themes that inspired their collections were the 'Russian Tsars' and 'Sports vs. Fashion'.

Foundation Degree student Marco Pedicone, exhibited a black shirt, complete with gold trim and high collar, inspired by the Russian Revolution.

Speaking at the event he said, “I’m excited to able to take part in Alternative Fashion Week. Prior to starting the Foundation Degree course I had only experimented with designing and now I am exhibiting at a London fashion show.”

First year student, Vanessa Seco, showed a long black shirt, her inspiration drawn from Russian Tsars, the Constructivism movement and aspects of the Revolution.

The course is really fun and offers both theoretical and practical experience, which gives me great insight into the day-to-day tasks carried out by a scene-of-crime officer, says Catherine. She is currently studying Forensic Science BTEC National Diploma and hopes to become a scene-of-crime officer for one of Britain's police forces.
