2004

In our 2004 inspection, 90 per cent of our grades were a
one (Outstanding) or a two (Good), confirming our position as one
of England’s leading further education colleges.
Almost three-quarters (73%) of the 230 lessons observed were
assessed as ‘good or better’. The College was also judged as
outstanding in: leadership and management, governance, response to
education and social inclusion, and support for students.
The College inspection took place over two weeks from 8-18
November 2004 and involved 22 inspectors.They examined 10
curriculum areas and a range of cross-College aspects using a
five-point grading system ranging from one (Outstanding) to five
(Very Poor).
The inspectors frequently remarked on the high standards of
teaching, the encouragement and support given to students, and how
diversity enriches College and classroom life.
Here are some of their comments:
- "Teachers are well qualified and experienced."
- "Students are generally highly motivated and keen to
learn."
- "There is good development of students’ personal and learning
skills."
- "Students become confident learners and make good
progress."
