Beacon award
Beacon award
At a special lunch in central London on 12 December 2005, Phil
Hope MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Skills,
presented the prestigious Learning and Skills Beacon award to City
and Islington College.
Jack Morris, the College's Chair of Governors, together with
Vice Chair, Kate O'Rourke, College principal, Frank McLoughlin,
Deputy Principal, Mary Rimington, the College's student union
president, Huseyin Acar, and former student Fahima Nessa, now
reading psychology at UCL, went along to receive the award.
Beacon Status
Beacon status is awarded jointly by the Department for Education
and Skills and the Learning and Skills Council for excellence in
post-16 education and training. It's given to colleges and
schools in recognition of high quality teaching and learning.
Beacon colleges and schools receive support to enable them share
their good practice and to promote innovation for the benefit of
the wider learning and skills community.
The award confirms our position as one of England’s leading
further education colleges.
“Learning and Skills Beacon status is awarded to those
organisations that are exemplars in their field. The award
enables them to work with the Department for Education and Skills,
the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) and from April 2006, the new
Quality Improvement Agency, to share their outstanding practice and
help accelerate the pace of quality improvement, to benefit the
whole post-16 sector. I would like to congratulate them on
their well deserved success and I very much look forward to working
with them in the future”.
Bill Rammel MP, Minister of State for Lifelong Learning.
