‘Rock Apocalypse’ brings down the house

16 February 2009

Students studying at the Sixth Form College wowed crowds last week when they performed their theatre production ‘Rock Apocalypse”.

Over 120 people flocked to see the show over a four-night run. Up to 70 of the Centre’s 16 to 19 year old GSCE and A-level students showed off their skills on and off the stage in roles such as band members, actors, singers, performers, technicians and backstage crew.

Rock Apocalypse 4

Rock Apocalypse is a rock 'n roll party show which is a both a parody and tongue-in-cheek tribute to horror and sci-fi b-movies from the 1950’s to the present day.

A rock 'n roll star nearly dies in a plane crash, but is brought back to life in a futuristic clinic having been 'rebuilt' and augmented by a mad doctor. They plan to rule the world by using mind control delivered over television transmissions, but haven't factored in the determination of two young newlyweds who mistakenly check in as marriage guidance patients.

Drama lecturer, Claire Widgery said, “Auditions for the show were open to all students at the Sixth Form College.

"Being part of a large production is a great way to get to know other students, learn about performance and have fun at college as well as contributing to their studies. They all did amazing well and received a standing ovation.”

I enjoy subjects that provide an opportunity for high level debate, says Kiren, who is doing A-levels in English Language and Literature, ICT and Politics, and I like the chance to grasp for as much intellectual knowledge as I possibly can. I'm particularly enjoying my Politics classes because of the opportunity to express my thoughts and ideas and I recently took part in the Sixth Form College's very own Question Time, which was a really interesting experience! I plan on doing a degree in politics at SOAS University after I finish my A-levels.
